Data Discs – Merging The Classics
Everyone knows that music sounds better on vinyl. However, the question I had running through my mind before I placed the needle to the blood red record is- Does the same apply to chiptunes? Join me on a journey of discovery as we travel back in time to the golden era of beat-em-ups; the age of Rage!
Wouldn’t it be great if you could re-live your all-time favourite, classic game soundtracks through the greatest, most stylish audio format in history? Well, now you can, in a glorious re-mastered form, adorned in a premium package of truly sexy proportions. Ladies and Gentlemen, I give you Data Discs, the guys who are about to blow your mind with epic nostalgia overload.
A Treat for the Senses
It makes sense to be listening to retro game soundtracks on vinyl! It makes even more sense to make said vinyl look marvelous! This, I imagine is somewhat similar to the conversation that took place just before Data Discs compiled quite possibly the most badass vinyl I’ve ever laid eyes upon. Creating a product that satisfies both the ears and the eyes is truly a wonderful feat. It feels pretty fancy too! I haven’t licked it…yet.
Data Discs Started Out Strong
SEGA’s highly acclaimed Streets of Rage is the initial vinyl from the guys at Data Discs and it comes in three distinct designs. The first is a limited edition translucent red with black splatter (it looks like savage justice has been dealt all over it!) The second design, a translucent red and the final, a regular black. Each design also comes bundled with some extra goodies. Not one but two lithographic prints featuring artwork from the Japanese and US/EU editions of the game.
As well as this, initial orders also included five cards featuring original character art, packaged in a hand-stamped envelope. For a price tag of merely £19.99, I’d say that was more than a generous package from the Data-Discs team.
How it Sounds
The audio is just as, if not more awesome than you’re building it up in your heads to be. Unearthed deep from the SEGA archives, the team have done a fantastic job remastering it; much justice has been dealt. Soon enough you’ll find yourself back on the streets, dishing out sweet, musical vengeance upon the various thugs which plague the city within Streets of Rage.
Where to Buy
Now for the bad news, if you haven’t ordered it yet, then I’m afraid you won’t be getting your hands on the gorgeous splatter design vinyl; at least not directly through Data Discs. It was advertised as limited and that certainly wasn’t a lie. Avid S.O.R fans and those who can simply recognise a thing of beauty when it comes around have taken full advantage and snapped up the lot.
The good news though is that the translucent red vinyl is still available to buy for £19.99! You can also check out Data Discs’ mound of other amazing video game vinyl. There’s plenty there to kick back and listen to. These are all available exclusively through the Data Discs website. So what are you waiting for? Kick it up a notch and grab yourself some quality video game vinyl!
